With so many different types, styles and makers of dolls available, it's often hard to know where to start and how much to spend when acquiring a doll. And if you're trying to research a doll you kept from childhood or inherited from a family member, the process can be just as confusing. Fortunately for those wanting to know more about these tried and true playthings, About.com's doll collecting guide
Denise Van Patten has taken a lot of the guesswork out of the process with her new book. The
Official Price Guide to Dolls (House of Collectibles, 2005) covers antique, vintage and modern dolls including hard to find antique wax and wooden dolls, ever-popular porcelains, and vintage dolls from the '40s, '50s and '60s many of use remember and still love.

I have a Barbie doll w/ the date 1958 stamped on her backside. It says Mattel Pat.Pending. Every place I check says the first Barbie was made in 1959. Can you give me any information on its value or lack of value? Thanks
