Should You Dry Old Linens on the Grass?

Monday August 18, 2008
Some people swear that drying old linens directly on grass will completely remove stains on a sunny day, but is this something you should try? Read How to Clean Old Linens for some hints to help you keep your vintage textiles clean, tidy and in top shape.

I tried this tip which I found on your site & it really works! I’m an antique dealer who sells vintage linens & doilies–many of which are soiled. I applied the mixture of salt & lemon juice, thereafter placing the article on the grass to lie in the sun. And sure enough, in no time the linen dries to a spotless condition.

This technique does work but you don’t need to put the item in the grass. Just laying it in the sun is the key. Putting fabrics on grass takes a huge risk of other stains… like grass stains. I lay fabrics that I’m treating in the sun on my picnic table. I pad the table top with white, dry beach towels. I keep a close watch and bring the item in as soon as the stain has disappeared. Then I rinse the cloth in cool water. If you own a child or a pet, make sure they’re not curious about your item. A cat will happily sit right on the fabric and enjoy the sunshine, too!

Steve, the same thing happened to me, too. I was going to read about the clock and learned how to get stains out of linens instead. That was informative, but not what I was expecting to read.

Five times “next” = $11,500
