Down-to-Earth Antiques: Collecting Utilitarian Stoneware

Tuesday May 12, 2009
I grew up surrounded by stoneware. It was in the kitchen, den, and on the patio, too. I think there was a moonshine jug (I knew more about The Beverly Hillbillies at that time than stoneware) sitting in the bathroom for some reason. I even destroyed one of my mother's favorite crockery bowls when I rolled a watermelon into it causing it to fly off the counter one hot summer day. Poor mom was devastated; I was glad the watermelon hadn't suffered the same fate. If you'd like to learn more about some of the antiques I came to know way too many years ago, take a look at Down-to-Earth Antiques: Collecting Utilitarian Stoneware. Updating this feature certainly brought back some fond memories for me.

I ALSO GREW UP WITH NUMEROUS CROCKS AND JUGS AND I HAVE MANY OF THEM IN MY HOUSE. THERE’S A BROWN JUG IN MY BATHROOM AND I PAINTED THE OUTSIDE OF THE OLD CLAW FOOTED BATHTUB BROWN TO MATCH IT. I HAVE A MUSTARD COLORED JUG ON THE ENCLOSED PORCH AND VARIOUS SIZES OF CROCKS THROUGHOUT THE HOUSE. MY BROTHER & HIS WIFE HAVE THE 50 GAL COVERED RED WING CROCK AND AT ONE POINT IT WAS BEING USED AS THE TV STAND.
