How to Display an Antique Quilt

Properly displaying your antique quilts helps prevent damage.

Difficulty Level: easy to average      Time Required: 15 minutes

Here's How:
  1. Display quilts in areas where light levels are low and away from any bulbs that might damage the fibers.
  2. The best way to display a quilt is by spreading it on an unused bed.
  3. If you decide to hang a quilt in your home, plan to only leave it up for six months at a time.
  4. If you have more than one quilt, rotating them is a good idea.
  5. Never use nails, pins or staples to hold a quilt on the wall.
  6. A good method is sewing a four inch wide tube or sleeve of fabric along the top back edge and stitching every inch or so through all layers of the quilt.
  7. Attach to a wall or other display area easily with a sturdy rod.
Tips:
  1. It's best to cover quilts with an everyday coverlet when storing, rather than displaying, them on an unused bed.
  2. The display best measures distribute the weight over the entire width of a quilt to avoid stressing the fabric.
  3. Remember that all light damage to textiles is irreversible.
