Definition: a chair with one arm (usually on the right side) that has been broadened with a paddle-shaped surface for writing; the rectangular or square paddle can be substituted for the regular arm or simply attached over the chair's original arm; dates from the 18th century, originally as a variation of the Windsor chair, but over the centuries has adapted to different styles, featuring in the work of designers Gustav Stickley and George Nakashima
