Heritage Auction Galleries opened a New York City office in fall 2010 at 445 Park Avenue in midtown Manhattan. Founded in 1976, the Dallas-based auction house also opened a branch in the Beverly Hills section of Los Angeles earlier in 2010.
One of the largest auctioneers in the country, Heritage handles close to 400 auctions a year in categories, ranging from comic books to contemporary art to wine. It is particularly strong in collectibles and the decorative arts, including antique furniture and fine jewelry. Heritage also began offering luxury goods auctions, featuring items such as high-end designer handbags, in 2010.
Many collectors know Heritage through its lively Internet auctions. But those in the New York area have the added opportunity to attend auctions and viewings held at the picturesque Fletcher-Sinclair Mansion. Built in 1899, by architect C.P.H. Gilbert, the French Renaissance structure resembles a compressed château. With its parquet floors, fireplaces, beamed ceilings and open, carved-woodwork staircase, it makes an impressively appropriate backdrop for the display of precious historic objects.
