Definition: a table supported by a single, central stand, usually shaped as a column or cylinder; top is typically round, but can be square or oval; developed in the early 1700s, the first versions were small, with relatively thin stands, ending in three legs; later, in the 19th century, the bases became thicker, ending in shorter legs or just a base with feet

Also Known As: tripod table (versions with three-legged base)

Example: With its carved mahogany base and marble top, the massive pedestal table made an impressive centerpiece for the foyer.
