Primitives can be characterized as the folk art of the antique furniture world. In contrast to fine furniture made by skilled craftsmen with aesthetics in mind, these roughly constructed pieces were built for functionality using readily available materials. While they are far from the realm of fine antiques, they do hold value and are well worth preserving. Many collectors of primitives and country decorators search high and low for furniture like the pieces shown here.
Keep in mind when evaluating primitive furniture that pieces with unusual embellishments and original paint oftentimes bring in higher values than plain pieces. Those signed and/or dated by the maker may also be valued higher than those of unknown origin.
