Definition: glass first made during the 19th century containing uranium oxide, which imparted a yellow tint to the glass; while uranium glass will indeed glow brightly under fluorescent light and trigger a Geiger Counter reading, it does not register known harmful levels of radiation; more commonly referred to as "vaseline" glass in the U.S. due to its resemblance in hue to petroleum jelly although the true color of the glass is a brighter shade of yellow; uranium content is also found in some older amber (deep yellowish-brown) glassware pieces; older beads in yellow or amber used in jewelry manufacture may also contain uranium and fluoresce under a "black" light
Pronunciation: u-rain-e-uhm glas
Also Known As: vaseline glass
Examples:
While it does glow under a fluorescent light due to uranium oxide content, green Depression glass isn't usually referenced as uranium glass.
