Definition: an article of jewelry - usually a ring or a brooch, with an intricate, openwork floral motif, consisting of multi-colored gems arranged to resemble flowers and often arranged in a vase or basket; originating in Italy in the late 17th century - the word means "little gardens" in Italian - as rings, they were highly popular throughout the 18th century; experienced a comeback in brooch or pin form during the Art Deco period of the 1920s and '30s
