In the 16th and 17th centuries, jewelry with deathlike motifs was called memento mori (Latin for "remember you must die" or "be mindful of death"). The idea was to encourage virtuous living by having a constant reminder of mortality on one's person. Both skeletons and coffins were familiar motifs with crafters of this type of jewelry.
