Top 5 Items Every Antiques Lover Needs

By , About.com Guide

There are a few things all collectors, dealers and antiques enthusiasts need to make their lives easier. Whether you buy them for yourself, or put them on a gift list, you'll be glad you did!

1. Magnifier/Jeweler's Loupe

Whether you opt for a magnifying glass, a jeweler's loupe, or both, these items will come in handy over and over again. Use them to aid in reading small marks and signatures, examining minute damage on pieces before you buy, and even to distinguish hand painted techniques from decals and transfers. In fact, you may want a magnifying glass for your desk and a handy jeweler's loupe to carry with you while shopping. Many come with carrying cases and easily fit into a pocket without adding bulk.

2. Hand Held Black Light

Using a black light to test antiques, can reveal fakes, flaws and repairs -- all major concerns for collectors and antiques dealers. A handheld black light is just the right size to use at home for testing objects before atempting to sell them online, or carrying with you when you're out shopping the flea market fields. Having a black light handy to assist in dating and authenticating antiques and collectibles can keep you from making a number of costly mistakes.

3. Black Light Keychain

Adding a miniature black light to your keychain will ensure you have this useful tool with you at all times. While a keychain light won't give you widespread light like a hand held model, it will do in a pinch when you're wanting to test a piece before you buy or sell. Keychain black lights are particularly useful in detecting fakes quickly and discreetly.

4. Photo Studio in a Box

Whether you want to document a collection for insurance purposes or have aspirations for selling antiques and collectibles online, taking good photographs can be quite a challenge. Lighting is the hardest aspect to master when photographing smalls, so having a "studio in a box" really helps by providing everything you need in one easy-to-use kit. It's truly invaluable for the amateur desiring above average photos, even if they're just to share with online pals.

5. Digital Camera

Being able to photograph collections, whether for insurance purposes or to venture into selling, takes the right kind of camera. It doesn't have to be expensive, however. There are some great digital cameras with macro features for photographing details and small objects on the market today at affordable prices. My choice is the Nikon Coolpix series of digital cameras for ease of use and quality photos. They aren't the most sophisticated cameras around, but they do get the job done affordably.
