Meet the "Morning Glory Lady". This is a type of rare and desirable china head doll named for colorful molded flowers tucked behind each ear resembling morning glories. These dolls date to the mid-1800s and most are attributed to the German manufacturer Schlaggenwald.

The example shown here is 24” tall with molded black hair (some have brown hair) in a style indicative of the period in which it was made. The thin, regal face characteristic of this doll is beautifully painted and the cloth body is original. It does have some condition issues, however. There are some wear rubs on the painted hair and facial features. It has also been repaired across the front but the restoration does not impact the face. Fingers are chipped on one hand.

In spite of the condition issues present, this doll sold for $3,900 at Morphy Auctions in August, 2012. If it were in excellent condition with minimal wear to the face paint, it could have easily garnered $5,000 and quite possibly more.
