Victorian Buckle-Shaped Sash Pin with Garden of Eden Motif - ca. late-1800s

- Jay B. Siegel
Definition: a type of pin used to secure a sash at a lady's hip during the late 1800s when the fad of wearing a sash over the shoulder and across bosom (imitating Queen Victoria) became popular; most examples have very thick pin stems to allow for penetrating several layers of fabric; many, but not all, resemble buckles from the front; common examples are usually made of brass, base metal or silver-plated base metal and range from simple to very ornate in design
Also Known As: sash brooch
Examples:
Ginny identified the brooch she purchased at the flea market as a Victorian sash pin by examining the thick pin stem and “c-shaped” clasp it neatly tucked into.
