Rivoli Rhinestone Example

- Jay B. Siegel
Definition: a type of multi-faceted foiled glass stone manufactured by Swarovski first used in costume jewelry in the 1950s and '60s; name refers to the shape of a round stone with a pointed top rather than the color, which can vary from bi-colored examples to solid colors; usually prong set but can also be glued in some settings; usually rather large in size and prominent in designs, but sizes can vary; sometimes confused with unfoiled inverted rhinestones in settings such as those used by Schreiner in jewelry from the same era
Pronunciation: riv-o-lee
Also Known As: headlight stones (a collector's nickname, especially when referring to clear rivoli stones)
Common Misspellings: ravioli
Examples:
Jim snickered when he read the eBay listing referring to the stones used in the DeLizza & Elster bracelet as "ravioli," a type of Italian pasta, rather than "rivoli."
